Annual diabetes symposium to be held June 20 at Bristol Regional Medical Center

     BRISTOL – The annual diabetes symposium for clinical professionals will be held Thursday, June 20, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

     Interested professionals can also participate by remote video conference from Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport and Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton, Va.

     The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 4:15 p.m., with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. Preregistration is required.

     Topics include psychological needs of diabetes patients, nutritional guidelines for diabetes management, insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring benefits, safe use of U-500 insulin in patients, new classes of oral antidiabetes medications and effective insulin use in hospitals.

     Speakers are:

  • Dr. Mansoor Tanwir, Wellmont Medical Associates’ newest endocrinologist
  • Jim Perkins, director of Wellmont Diabetes Treatment Centers
  • Elisabetta Politi, nutrition director at Duke University’s Diet & Fitness Center
  • Laura Hite, senior clinical business manager at Animas Corp.
  • Dr. Wendy Lane, clinical endocrinologist and director of research for Mountain Diabetes and Endocrine Center
  • Dr. Rick Hess, assistant professor at East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy

     Dr. Tanwir is joining Wellmont Medical Associates Endocrinology in Church Hill. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and is finishing his clinical fellowship in endocrinology at this hospital. Dr. Tanwir is board-certified in internal medicine and is board-eligible in endocrinology.

      “This symposium is excellent opportunity for professionals to enhance their understanding of diabetes and the multitude of conditions this disease can affect,” Perkins said. “Diabetes is a significant and growing health concern in our region, so this important event will provide valuable information that will bolster the quality of care in our region.”
