JOHNSON CITYDr. Peter Earl, a highly respected obstetrician and gynecologist with 29 years experience, has joined Wellmont Medical Associates Women’s Health.

Dr. Earl will see patients in his two offices – 2428 Knob Creek Road, Suite 201, Johnson City, and 6 Sheridan Square, Suite 100, Kingsport. He also delivers babies and performs a variety of innovative medical procedures for women at Holston Valley Medical Center.

“Joining Wellmont Medical Associates is a perfect fit because it is a solid organization,” Dr. Earl said. “I have many colleagues who are part of this physician-led, professionally managed entity, and they are very pleased with its structure and accomplishments. This partnership will provide me with the stability and predictability that will enable me to focus solely on providing the best patient care possible.”

Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, this medical doctor has special training and expertise with the da Vinci Surgical System at Holston Valley. He uses this piece of surgical equipment primarily to perform hysterectomies, but he also deploys it for other medical conditions, such as endometriosis.

“The benefit is being able to perform more detailed, fine and complicated surgeries with da Vinci than with other techniques,” Dr. Earl said. “It’s also much easier on my patients because they might be able to go home the same day and be back to their regular routines in a couple of weeks. That’s in addition to the other benefits of less blood loss and reduced pain and scarring.”

Dr. Earl, who has practiced in the region for six years, is also focused on helping women with other needs, such as preventive care, gynecologic screenings, fertility treatments and menopausal medicine. His care philosophy is a blend of humor, honesty and a willingness to stay with a patient as long as she needs him.

“I answer every question she has before I leave the room because I’m there to take care of her in the most complete manner possible. The longer someone is my patient, the better I get to know her, and that’s what’s so special about practicing as an obstetrician and gynecologist.”

Dr. Earl learned about hospitals early in life, having sustained a number of injuries riding his bicycle and playing hockey. While he did not enjoy his injuries, he liked watching the hospital in action.

After receiving undergraduate degrees at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Dr. Earl pursued his medical career at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology from Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix before starting his practice.

He remembers his third year of medical school when he worked with an obstetrician and gynecologist. The first day, he helped the physician deliver a baby. The next day, the physician had Dr. Earl deliver a baby under his supervision.

“Delivering babies is an amazing experience,” Dr. Earl said. “There is nothing that matches it in life. But I also like to see my patients in the office and assist them with their medical needs.”

Dr. Earl is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member of the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons and American Society of Reproductive Medicine and a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners.

“We are fortunate to have an obstetrician and gynecologist of Dr. Earl’s stature join us and work with the many excellent specialists and other caregivers who ensure our women’s health program delivers superior care,” said Dr. Stephen Combs, chief executive medical officer of Wellmont Medical Associates. “He is an excellent physician whose extensive experience greatly benefits his patients in Johnson City and Kingsport.”

The opening of Dr. Earl’s office in Johnson City is the latest service offering Wellmont Health System offers in Washington County. Dr. Earl will see patients in the same building that houses the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute.

Other services in Johnson City include a Wellmont Cancer Institute office on Wesley Street and Wellmont Urgent Care, the Wellmont Medical Associates primary care practices of Drs. Robert Connell and Rita Plemmons and the Wellmont Breast Center, all on Marketplace Boulevard behind Fuddruckers. Drs. Connell and Plemmons are both medical doctors.

Wellmont Medical Associates also provides primary care and pediatrics services on Forest Drive near the Gray exit of Interstate 26.
