CHURCH HILL – An endocrinologist treats a broad array of medical conditions and diseases, and that diversity appeals to Dr. Mansoor Tanwir, a new specialist now seeing patients in the region.

Dr. Tanwir has joined Wellmont Medical Associates Endocrinology and is practicing at 115 Garland Ave. He is located in the same office as his wife – Dr. Rabeeya Nusrat, a Wellmont Medical Associates internal medicine physician – and Dr. David Hensley, a Wellmont Medical Associates family medicine physician. All three physicians are medical doctors.

Endocrinology is a field of medicine that diagnoses and treats diseases that pertain to hormones. It also addresses the endocrine glands and tissues that secrete hormones. One of the more well-known diseases encompassed by this medical specialty is diabetes, which is a growing and major health issue locally and across the nation.

Patients can also seek care from Dr. Tanwir for thyroid disorders, hormone imbalances, metabolic diseases, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency and lipid abnormalities associated with heart disease.

Dr. Tanwir said he welcomes the opportunity to work with his patients to improve their overall health.

“Talking with my patients and listening to them is an important part of my practice and gives me insight about the person and his or her disease process,” Dr. Tanwir said. “I also believe strongly in participatory medicine, which gives my patients an opportunity to play a role in improving their lives.”

The son of a primary care physician, Dr. Tanwir was inspired by his father’s commitment to patients, leading him to pursue a medical career as well. He received his medical degree from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan.

Dr. Tanwir completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

As he considered possible locations for establishing his practice, Dr. Tanwir was drawn to Wellmont Medical Associates because of a shared medical philosophy.

“When I came for my interview and talked with the leaders of Wellmont Medical Associates, the organization’s overarching goals of high-quality patient care were congruent with my interests,” he said. “I just had a good feeling that, working collaboratively with my patients, I could positively impact their lives.”

An outdoors enthusiast, Dr. Tanwir was also attracted by the abundance of recreational opportunities available in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Plus, his brother works relatively close at Virginia Tech, and his sister lives in the Charlotte, N.C., area.

Dr. Stephen Combs, a medical doctor and chief executive medical officer of Wellmont Medical Associates, said he looks forward to Dr. Tanwir’s contributions to patient care.

“His enthusiasm for medicine and impressive training will help our patients considerably,” Dr. Combs said. “In particular, he will be a tremendous asset as he works with those who have been diagnosed with diabetes, which can be problematic because it contributes to so many other medical conditions. But his expertise on other topics as well will greatly benefit our region as we cultivate a culture of wellness.”

Dr. Tanwir is available for appointment by referral. More information about him is available at www.wellmontphysicians.org.
