ROGERSVILLE – For many hospital patients, nothing sounds quite so appetizing as a home-cooked meal.
Thanks to a new family kitchen at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital, home cooking is now an option for patients and their loved ones. Located in the hospital’s medical-surgical unit, the kitchen can be used by patients and families.
“The kitchen is a great addition to our hospital,” said Ruth Couch, the hospital’s Planetree coordinator. “It makes the hospital more patient friendly and allows families to be more involved in care.”
The kitchen also opens the door for more community involvement at the hospital.
“Hawkins County Memorial really is a community hospital, and we would like for people from the community to come in and bring food for patients and their families,” Couch said. “We hope to start a program that would allow organizations to sponsor the kitchen on a monthly basis.”
Above all, Couch said, the kitchen is a place for patients and their families to find a sense of normalcy during their hospital stay.
“This is something new for our area,” Couch said. “Hopefully, it will give families who are here a sense of belonging, because it really is their hospital.”
