Hawkins County Memorial chosen among top 10 percent in nation for patient satisfaction

ROGERSVILLEHawkins County Memorial Hospital, a shining example of healthcare excellence for more than 50 years, was recently recognized by a national ratings agency for being among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation in patient satisfaction.

The hospital received the honor from CareChex, a division of Comparion that independently evaluates hospitals on multiple components of hospital quality. Hawkins County Memorial is part of an elite group in the nation for patient satisfaction in overall hospital care, medical care and surgical care.

“This is a tremendous honor for Hawkins County Memorial and reflects the partnership between the caregivers in our hospital and everyone in the community who has supported this facility,” said Fred Pelle, the hospital’s interim president.

“Our physicians, nurses and other medical professionals are committed to delivering superior care with compassion, close to home. We are fortunate to serve a community that is just as focused on high-quality health care and recognizes the value of this community hospital to a patient’s healing.”

Pelle credited Hawkins County Memorial’s board of directors for providing the wisdom and leadership that have empowered the hospital to effectively and efficiently meet patient needs. He praised people who live and work in Hawkins County and nearby communities for embracing the hospital as a source for quality health care.

“The patients who access our services are our friends, neighbors and loved ones, and we appreciate them for entrusting their care to us,” Pelle said. “We have worked to update our facility and services and provide an environment that comforts patients and their families.”

Hawkins County Memorial’s commitment to the community has resulted in multiple enhancements to the hospital. These include a new nuclear medicine camera and a new computed tomography scanner that has reduced the amount of radiation to which patients are exposed. The hospital also began offering HeartSHAPE® calcium scoring tests that can help patients learn whether they have heart disease.

The hospital also made other facility improvements, such as a renovated emergency department, a covered front entrance and the opening of a chapel.

Patient safety has also been front and center at Hawkins County Memorial. The hospital was one of the first within Wellmont Health System to adopt computerized provider order entry, which ended the practice of hand-written orders that had the potential to be misinterpreted.

Hawkins County Memorial also achieved Stage 1 in the meaningful use of certified electronic medical records. This further reduced the potential for medical errors and increased secured sharing of patient data among providers.

“It is important to us to be vigilant about ways we can deliver care to our patients even better,” Pelle said. “As stewards of our community’s health care, we respect our responsibility to meet the needs of our patients and put them on a path to wellness.”

One case in January showed just how far caregivers at Hawkins County Memorial will go to improve a patient’s health. Physicians and nurses in the hospital’s emergency department teamed with Hawkins County EMS to save a man who had been without a pulse for 109 minutes. This collaborative effort represented the commitment by Hawkins County Memorial caregivers to achieve successful outcomes for their patients.

Hawkins County Memorial, which is accredited by The Joint Commission, has a team of 100 percent board-certified physicians and nearly 200 nurses, technicians and support staff. Dr. Mihir Patel, a hospitalist at Hawkins County Memorial, said the desire to serve patients is ever-present inside the hospital.

“All of us who work at Hawkins County Memorial know what a privilege it is to serve as medical professionals, and we never lose sight that helping our patients is our No. 1 priority,” he said. “We are grateful to have such a strong partnership with our patients and the community that enhances the quality of life for everyone.”
