Holston Valley named in top three hospitals in state by U.S. News & World Report; 11 service areas recognized

KINGSPORT – Superior care practiced daily by expert medical professionals has again landed Holston Valley Medical Center among the leading hospitals in the country by a highly respected national magazine.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Holston Valley among the elite in Tennessee and across the country in new lists published online Tuesday, July 16. Kingsport’s flagship hospital, which has delivered compassionate care to the community for 78 years, has been ranked as one of Tennessee’s top three hospitals.

The magazine also has classified Holston Valley as high performing in 11 services, including cardiology and cancer.

“These are excellent results and showcase the commitment by our physicians, nurses and other caregivers to deliver the best care possible to our patients,” said Virginia Frank, Holston Valley’s president. “Every day, we see the drive by our medical professionals to improve patients’ lives, but it’s nice when a third party validates the quality of our care.”

The results are part of the annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings, which recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. The tally is for 2013-14, the 24th year the magazine has compiled this list.

RTI International, a leading research organization, produced the specialty rankings, and U.S. News used that data to determine state and metro rankings.

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they might need a particularly difficult surgery or have an added risk because of other health problems or age. The magazine relied on objective measures such as patient survival and safety data and adequacy of nursing staffing levels in determining the rankings.

Holston Valley has been spotlighted positively before for patient safety, collecting high ratings from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that promotes transparency and value-based hospital incentives. The hospital and the rest of Wellmont Health System also maintain excellent nurse-to-patient ratios.

Holston Valley was named a high performer in cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and pulmonology.

“This bountiful list reflects the breadth of care we provide our patients at our outstanding hospital, which can handle some of the most complex medical procedures,” Frank said. “It will continue to assure our valued patients and their families that outstanding care is available close to home in our hospital.”

The recognition of Holston Valley’s heart program is not surprising considering it has consistently been honored nationally. Recently, CareChex, a division of Comparion that evaluates hospitals on multiple components of quality selected Holston Valley as one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation for cardiac care, major cardiac surgery, coronary bypass surgery, heart attack treatment and vascular surgery.

Holston Valley has also been chosen twice by the nation’s leading consumer magazine among the elite for heart bypass surgery.

The recognition of Holston Valley’s neurological care also continues a trend. In its most recent ratings, CareChex also picked the hospital to be among the top 100 in the nation for this service.

“Even though we continue to achieve excellent outcomes for patients and receive high scores from external sources, we remain vigilant about the need for continuous improvement,” Frank said. “We constantly look at our methods of care and the processes we use to ensure optimal results for our patients. This focus on our patients has enabled us to remain the preferred caregiver in the community.”

The rankings are publicly available now at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals. They will also be listed in the printed U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 Guidebook, which will be available in bookstores and on newsstands Aug. 27.
