KINGSPORT – The Wellmont Cancer Institute will celebrate survivors with two events on Sunday, June 2, that are designed to inspire, encourage and support people who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Everyone who attends is guaranteed to have fun, too.
In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day, local celebrations will be held at Bristol Regional Medical Center and at the Allandale Barn in Kingsport. Allandale Barn is located at 4444 W. Stone Drive.
“Some people who receive a cancer diagnosis might assume the worst, but these days, technology and advances in medicine allow people to enjoy longer, more fulfilling lives than ever before,” said Sherri Lawson, the cancer institute’s community outreach coordinator and educator, who organized the events. “National Cancer Survivors Day is a wonderful opportunity for cancer survivors to celebrate their achievements and provide strength and hope to others who have been recently diagnosed.”
The Bristol event, scheduled from 2-4 p.m., will be held at Bristol Regional’s Monarch Auditorium. Dr. Sue Prill, a medical oncologist with Wellmont Medical Associates Oncology & Hematology in Bristol, will deliver the keynote address. Music, refreshments and door prizes will follow her remarks.
In Kingsport, festivities kick off at 1 p.m. with outdoor activities such as cornhole, badminton, water balloons and barbecue. Dr. Anil Tumkur, a medical oncologist at Wellmont Medical Associates Oncology & Hematology in Kingsport, will make opening remarks.
Invitations were mailed to several thousand cancer survivors who have been treated by the cancer institute, but anyone who has survived cancer is welcome to attend.
National Cancer Survivors Day began in 1987 and is recognized by millions around the world. For more information, please visit www.ncsd.org. For more information about cancer, please visit www.wellmont.org.
